We’ve all been there. You’ve barely stepped out of the house after applying your makeup, but your lipstick is already fading. You take a drink during your lunch break, and you’ve left a kiss mark on the glassware. What can you do to make lipstick last throughout the day? Beauty experts weigh in on how to make lipstick last longer.
1. Keep your lips healthy
Keeping your lips healthy is one of the best ways to ensure your lipstick lasts. As part of your beauty regimen, exfoliate your lips gently, using a soft toothbrush, and follow this by hydrating your lips. Try applying a lip balm or lip moisturizer, but blot off the excess before applying your lipstick, so that the color will really stick and last longer.
2. Use a pencil liner
It’s not enough to just use lipstick. Makeup artists know the power of pencil liners to make lipstick last longer and usually apply this on the outer lips to make lipstick last longer. Aside from using it to line your lips, you can also use the lip liner to fill in your lips as an undercoat before applying the actual lipstick.
3. Apply lipstick using a lip brush
Most women apply lipstick straight from the tube. However, this is usually best for touch ups during the day. When you first apply your makeup in the morning, it’s best to use a lip brush to apply the lipstick. Apply the lipstick carefully and evenly using the brush, but don’t overload it with color, as it can easily smidge.
4. Layer up
Because women need to talk, eat and drink, it’s normal that the pigments on lips will fade throughout the day. A single coat just won’t cut it. For lipstick to last longer, you need to layer up the coats. Blot each coat with tissue before reapplying another coat. You’ll need to apply two or three coats of color to help your lipstick last several hours.
5. Choose a long-lasting lipstick formula
A lot of makeup brands have developed products with long-lasting formulas. Products like these are best for events where you won’t have the opportunity to regularly touch up your lipstick. The downside is that these products can dry your lips quickly, so it’s best avoided by women who suffer from dry lips.
