Style Tips from Sex & the City

Its six-year run may be long over, but no other show has captured the hearts of style and fashion mavens as much as HBO’s Sex & the City. In honor of Sarah Jessica Parker, who is celebrating her birthday this March 25, here are a few style lessons we’ve learned from her character and the show’s resident trendsetter Carrie Bradshaw.

Always Dress to Impress

“No matter how fast paced the city is, I always manage to get my clothes on before I leave the apartment.”

Carrie taught women everywhere that a busy schedule is never an excuse for not looking great. Throughout the show, Carrie’s flair for fashion and putting together great outfits have inspired women everywhere to always look their best, even if they’re just going to McDonald’s. Popsugar compiles 60 of Carrie’s most memorable outfits on the show.

Take some risks

“You shouldn’t have to sacrifice who you are just because somebody else has a problem with it.”

Carrie was never afraid to take risks when it came to fashion, mixing clashing prints like stripes and florals, pairing mismatched colors, and wearing heavily textured pieces. Her statement jewelry pieces like the infamous nameplate necklace and oversized flower corsage started a whole slew of knock-offs. Here are 10 trends started by the show.

It’s all about the Shoes

“It’s really hard to walk in a single woman’s shoes—that’s why you sometimes need really special shoes!”

Aside from her love affairs with various leading men, the headstrong Ms. Bradshaw was known for lusting over fashionable footwear, including those designed by Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, and Yves St Laurent, to name a few. PopChart Lab even came up with an illustrated guide to the 50 most iconic shoes worn by Carrie in SATC.

Bag it!

“Balls are to men, what purses are to women. It’s just a little bag, but we’d feel naked in public without it.”
